Van Gaal's current deal was due to expire next summer and he had made it clear that he would like to manage a national team in the near future, but negotiations over a 12-month extension were successful.
''I am glad that I will be staying in Munich for a further year,'' he said. ''We have started something here that I would like to continue. And FC Bayern give me opportunities that I as a coach could not find better anywhere else.''
Bayern made a slow start to last season and Van Gaal's job was hanging in the balance until a 4-1 win at Juventus in the Champions League and a revival in the Bundesliga saved him. He went on to lead Bayern to a domestic double and the final of the Champions League, where they were beaten by Inter Milan in Madrid.
As a result of that success, Van Gaal chose not to make any new signings this summer and to keep his faith in a winning squad. Rummenigge does not regret the decision not to spend money on reinforcements.
"The coach has this philosophy and we are fully behind him,'' Rummenigge added. "The coach is doing an excellent job and it is not he but the players who are now under pressure to deliver the goods.
"I would always prefer to do things you might not expect. After a victory, anyone could renew a contract. Therefore, it is a good sign for the public that, even after the defeat to Mainz, we would like to extend the coach's stay."
