Fabregas could miss Chelsea clash

September 30, 2010
Cesc Fabregas could miss Saturday's Premier League game against Chelsea with a hamstring injury - but Arsene Wenger will give the Arsenal captain until the last possible moment to prove his fitness.

Cesc Fabregas' closing down was rewarded with a freak goal - and an injury
Wenger also confirmed that Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen will certainly not travel to Stamford Bridge, having failed to recover from an Achilles injury, and Abou Diaby remains a doubt with an ankle injury.
"I don't know about Cesc" said Wenger. "It looks a 50:50 but a 50:50 balancing on the negative side. I will find out on Saturday morning."
Wenger conceded earlier this week that his captain had "little hope" of featuring against the champions, but it seems as though the World Cup winner will be given every opportunity to play.
Fabregas injured his hamstring in the process of scoring a freak goal against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light two weeks ago, when a clearance by Anton Ferdinand ricocheted off him and into the net.
Wenger will give Diaby every chance to be involved on Saturday. The Arsenal manager said: "Abou Diaby has an 80% chance to be involved. I am not sure if he will be completely 100% but it is 100% he will be in the squad."
Manuel Almunia, who has not trained since conceding three goals against West Brom last weekend, missed Tuesday night's Champions League win over Partizan Belgrade with an elbow injury, meaning Lukasz Fabianski could start his second consecutive match in goal.
Meanwhile, there was positive news about two of Arsenal's longer term injuries.
"Nicklas Bendtner (groin) should be available after the international break," said Wenger, "and Aaron Ramsey (leg) is progressing very well."

David Villa netted a second-half penalty to earn Barcelona a point from their trip to Rubin Kazan, who once again proved a frustrating opponent for the Catalan giants.Villa slotted home on the hour-mark to cancel out Cristian Noboa's 30th-minute penalty for Rubin, with both goalkeepers coming agonisingly close to saving the respective spot-kicks.
Barca dominated for large periods but not even the second-half arrival of fit-again Lionel Messi could inspire Pep Guardiola's side to victory, and the visitors almost ended up empty-handed as Rubin substitute Obafemi Martins hit the woodwork late on.
The result leaves Barca on four points from two games on Group D following their 5-1 mauling of Panathinaikos in round one, while Russian outfit Rubin picked up their first point having previously lost to FC Copenhagen.
Rubin proved a problematic opponent for Barca in last season's Champions League, winning 2-1 at Camp Nou and then holding the 2009 European champions goalless at home, and Kurban Berdyev's side had Guardiola's men on the back foot again tonight after taking a first-half lead.
Barca had bossed the opening stages and hit the crossbar through Pedro Rodriguez before Villa fired just wide, but against the run of play Rubin took the lead.
Victor Valdes' mis-hit clearance gave Vitali Kaleshin the chance to burst into the Barca where he was sent tumbling by Dani Alves as he tried to burst away from the Brazilian and Gerard Pique.
Valdes almost atoned for his part in the incident as he guessed right for Noboa's penalty, but although he managed to get some of his body behind the shot, he could not prevent the Rubin captain from putting his side ahead.
That was a blow to Barca but they had a chance to get back on level terms just before the break when Pedro side-footed another good chance narrowly wide.
Barca had to wait until the 60th minute to even things up, with Andres Iniesta winning a penalty in almost exactly the same place and fashion as Kaleshin had in the first half, Spain's World Cup final hero being brought down by Lasha Salukvadze as he attempted to escape from two defenders.
Villa, like Noboa before him, managed to find the back of the net but not before suffering a scare as the diving Sergei Ryzhikov got a hand to his shot but not enough to keep it out. The final half-hour was virtually all Barca, with Dani Alves almost capitalising on a terrible back-header only to be denied by Ryzhikov.
The arrival of Messi, who had missed Barca's past two matches with an ankle injury, gave the visitors another attacking threat and the Argentinian drew a good block from Ryzhikov in the 67th minute.
Messi then headed another opportunity over before Barca enjoyed a big let-off in the 86th minute when Rubin came so close to netting on a rare attack.
Martins peeled away from Carles Puyol to get on the end of a deep cross but his powerful downward header from four yards out hit the near post and rebounded to safety.
Even after that though Barca had two great chances of their own to take the spoils, Bojan Krkic heading wide when unmarked before Iniesta curled an injury-time effort over with just Ryzhikov to beat - a miss that left more than one Barca player holding his head as the Spanish champions had to settle for a share of the points.

Brazilian striker Ari struck twice as Spartak Moscow stepped up their push for a place in the Champions League knock-out stages against a Zilina side who were overrun.Ari's compatriot Welliton had been the player Zilina feared the most, after his 16 goals in 17 domestic league appearances for Spartak this year.
But former AZ Alkmaar frontman Ari was the player who made the difference between the teams, scoring in each half as the Russians took their points tally to six from two matches, ahead of home and away fixtures with Chelsea.
Ibson, another Brazilian, added a late third to emphasise the difference between the teams.
Spartak beat Marseille 1-0 in their opening group game, hinting at their strength, while Zilina were downed 4-1 away by Chelsea.
Although Slovakia recently beat Russia in the qualifying group stage for Euro 2012, their national champions have yet not looked up to scratch for this competition.
With pace to spare in their attack, Spartak got in among the Zilina defence early on.
Shots from Aleksandr Sheshukov and Sergei Parshivlyuk carried threat, while Aiden McGeady's pace tormented the visitors.
Welliton went close soon before the opening goal, when his left-footed half-volley was parried out by Martin Dubravka.
Ari made the breakthrough after 34 minutes when Alex's left-footed corner from the right found him around 15 yards from goal beyond the far post, from where he sent a looping header over Dubravka.
Defender Patrik Mraz might have done better but stationed himself behind the line, and by the time the ball reached him it had entered the goal, making his prodded clearance worthless.
Spartak pushed for a second goal but it did not arrive until the 61st minute, with Ari again the man on target.
Alex swung a fine lofted pass from a central position to Dmitri Kombarov stationed on the left flank, and he wasted no time in firing over a probing low cross which Ari, attacking the far post, swept in from close range.
It was nearly 3-0 in the 75th minute when Alex unleashed a 20-yard strike which hit Jozef Piacek on its way through to Dubravka, seemingly close to the defender's arm, and the goalkeeper pushed the ball against his left-hand post.
Ibson had replaced Welliton by that stage, and in the 89th minute he condemned Zilina to a second successive three-goal European defeat with a sweet finish on the run after Christian Maidana angled in a perfect cross from the left.

                                                 MORTALITY LEGACY
We are all mortal being
any moment may be our last
We will never be lovier than we are now
and we will never be here again
when you feel it, its now upon you,its cold hands already
encircling you in an embrace, that final embrace, that takes away you
you look around you,you become very conscious of everything in the world
You see the rising morning sun,the birds in the air,
The trees dancing with the wind, the soft feel of breeze upon your cheeks
You think of the rain, the moon, the stars, you remember your childhood,
your growing up days, the people in your life, your parents, your siblings
your friends, even those you fight with, you think of the moment you had
laugh, when you had cried, when you had thought life was beautiful or
not worth living.
Now everything is significantly important and fill you nostalgia
You want to smile but instead you cry cos it breaks your heart.
Soon you will be gone and you will miss everything.
you will never see the sun rise again, you will never see the moon at night,
you will never see the faces of your loved ones, you will never cry
or laugh nor think again cos you will be dead.
And leave your loved ones on that day,put into the ground like a faded
flower.
"Death is not easy for those left behind"
Lets not be afraid to die,but be afraid of what people will remember us for,
so live a life that will affect others positively.
Give a helping hand today
what ever comes our way,we always have a choice
its that choice that make us who we are
And we always have the choice yo do what right

Reina stresses need for patience

September 28, 2010
Pepe Reina believes it could take up to six months for Roy Hodgson to get Liverpool back on track.

Pepe Reina is confident that Roy Hodgson will get it right at Anfield
Liverpool have taken just six points from their opening six games and currently sit just two places above the relegation zone, with Hodgson struggling to turn things around after replacing Rafael Benitez this summer.
Reina is confident that Hodgson's methods will prove successful at Anfield, but he has warned Reds fans not to expect too much in the short-term.
"When you have so many changes moving in a new direction under a new boss, things don't happen instantly," he told LFC Weekly. "It can take between three and six months before you see improvements.
"Obviously, the quicker we adapt and improve as a team, the better it will be for everyone. That doesn't just happen overnight. Each of us has to adjust to working in a new way.
"With the passing of each day, I get used to it and what the manager wants. It's the same for all of us. We need to be patient."
Reina feels, though, that Liverpool have not been helped by the fixture list at the start of the season.
"People who criticise us about it should look at the fixtures we've had. It has been a difficult start. Arsenal at home and then going to play Manchester City, Manchester United and Birmingham away was never going to be easy.
"Not many teams will go to the City of Manchester Stadium, Old Trafford or St Andrew's and win. Those three teams have very good records at home."
Meanwhile, Hodgson is warning that Fabio Aurelio could still be some way away from a first-team return after suffering an Achilles injury last month.
"Where Fabio Aurelio is concerned, caution and prudence have to be the words that we use," he said. "He is progressing all the time and his efforts are very commendable but we can't bring him back too early.
"We took him off against Trabzonspor as a precautionary measure, as we didn't want to run the risk of him sustaining a serious problem."

Van Gaal signs new contract with Bayern Munich

September 27, 2010
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that coach Louis van Gaal has signed a one-year contract extension, despite his side's poor start to the season.

Louis van Gaal has endured another slow start to the Bundesliga season
Van Gaal's current deal was due to expire next summer and he had made it clear that he would like to manage a national team in the near future, but negotiations over a 12-month extension were successful.
''I am glad that I will be staying in Munich for a further year,'' he said. ''We have started something here that I would like to continue. And FC Bayern give me opportunities that I as a coach could not find better anywhere else.''
Bayern made a slow start to last season and Van Gaal's job was hanging in the balance until a 4-1 win at Juventus in the Champions League and a revival in the Bundesliga saved him. He went on to lead Bayern to a domestic double and the final of the Champions League, where they were beaten by Inter Milan in Madrid.
As a result of that success, Van Gaal chose not to make any new signings this summer and to keep his faith in a winning squad. Rummenigge does not regret the decision not to spend money on reinforcements.
"The coach has this philosophy and we are fully behind him,'' Rummenigge added. "The coach is doing an excellent job and it is not he but the players who are now under pressure to deliver the goods.
"I would always prefer to do things you might not expect. After a victory, anyone could renew a contract. Therefore, it is a good sign for the public that, even after the defeat to Mainz, we would like to extend the coach's stay."

Drogba was rumoured to be the subject of a transfer bid from former club Marseille in the summer, something that was denied by Chelsea, but the Ligue 1 outfit have stated their desire to eventually re-sign the 32-year-old.
Chelsea signed Drogba from Marseille after he had scored 30 goals in 43 games in all competitions in the 2003-04 season. The striker himself previously indicated he would like to return to Stade Vélodrome before he retires.
Drogba may get that chance in December when the two sides meet again in the return tie of this week's Champions League encounter at Stamford Bridge. Drogba will miss the home match against Marseille as he completes a two-game suspension.
Drogba, who has two years to run on his current deal, told the Sun: "When I signed a new contract at Chelsea, I always said I wanted to finish my career here. But I am well placed to say that anything can happen.
"When I was at Marseille I said I would finish my career there but, one week later, everything changed.
"I hope I don't miss the return match as the Velodrome has an exceptional atmosphere."

Sneijder: I could never say no to Manchester United

September 26, 2010
Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder admits he would be tempted by the prospect of a move to Manchester United at some point in his career.

The Ajax academy graduate has flourished into one of Europe's finest.
Sneijder, who helped Inter secure the Treble last season, was linked with a move to Old Trafford during Netherlands' World Cup campaign before pledging his future to the Nerazzurri.
But his position at San Siro has been called into question once again after talks over a new contract collapsed. While Sneijder has ruled out a return to former club Real Madrid, he does appear more open to a move to United.
"If somebody asks me if I will ever play for Manchester United, it's impossible for me to say no," Sneijder told the Daily Star Sunday. "How can you say that if the chance came you would not play for one of the biggest clubs in the world?
"I don't think there is any player in the world who could publicly rule out ever playing for Manchester United, and if they did I would doubt they were telling the truth.
"The Premier League, in terms of top clubs, is the strongest in the world, and it would be nice to finish my career saying I have played at the very top in Spain, Italy, and England.
"'There is not many who can say they have done that, and if that does happen for me I would only want it to be with Manchester United."

West Brom destroyed Arsenal's chance to close the gap on Chelsea at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a thrilling victory over the Gunners at the Emirates.Three second-half goals from Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and former Arsenal player Jerome Thomas put Albion in front before Samir Nasri scored two late goals for Arsene Wenger's side.
It was Arsenal first home defeat since they lost to Manchester United last January and kept them four points adrift of leaders Chelsea while Albion moved up into fifth place.
The writing was on the wall for Arsenal in the opening half. Thomas caused the home defence an early scare but his cross from the left wing evaded the lurking Odemwingie.
Emmanuel Eboue had the first real chance for Arsenal in the 13th minute but his shot on the turn from the edge of the penalty area went wide of Scott Carson's right-hand upright.
Andrey Arshavin should have put the home side in front seconds later but he managed to hit the post twice when he got on the end of a cross from Eboue.
It was a close escape for the visitors who were now beginning to feel the full onslaught of Arsene Wenger's side.
In the 20th minute, Marouane Chamakh went close with a six-yard header as Arsenal continued to surge forward. Four minutes later, Nasri went close with a 25-yard low drive that flashed just wide of the target.
Odemwingie almost gave the visitors a shock lead against the run of play in the 27th minute but Manuel Almunia pushed his angled drive onto the post.
Albion were enjoying their best spell of the game and seconds later Almunia had to be alert to collect a dangerous left-wing cross from James Morrison.
Wenger was forced to stalk the edge of his technical area in frustration and his demeanour was not eased by Nasri's volley into the crowd from 18 yards in the 36th minute.
Almunia then became the villain and hero in the space of 60 seconds as West Brom squandered a great chance to take the lead.
In the 37th minute Almunia brought down the speedy Odemwingie and referee Michael Oliver rightly awarded a penalty and booked the 'keeper.
But Chris Brunt's poor left-footed effort was easily saved by Almunia, who dived to his right to keep it out.
In the final minute of the half, Albion keeper Carson had to be at his best to deny Bacary Sagna's six-yard header - tipping his effort over the bar.
West Brom took the lead in the 50th minute when Thomas wriggled free on the left flank and crossed into the six-yard box for the unmarked Odemwingie to put the Baggies ahead.
And it got worse for the home side two minutes later when Almunia blundered to allow Albion to make it 2-0.
Brunt set Gonzalo Jara free on the right and his low angled drive from the right edge of the penalty area went through Almunia's hands and into the net. The Albion scorer was booked for taking his shirt off in celebration.
Wenger immediately responded with a double substitution, sending on Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky in place of Abou Diaby and Eboue.
The changes helped to revive the Gunners but West Brom's defending was committed and impressive. In the 65th minute, Arsenal made a third change when Wenger removed Laurent Koscielny in favour of Carlos Vela.
Arsenal pushed forward in numbers but Albion's rearguard held firm despite all the home side's efforts. West Brom sensationally made it 3-0 when Brunt crossed for the livewire Thomas to fire into the net in the 73rd minute.
But Arsenal finally reduced the deficit two minutes when Nasri danced through the West Brom defence before firing past Carson.
Nasri grabbed his second of the game in injury time but, despite a frantic finish, it was not enough to prevent Arsenal slumping to their first home defeat since last January.

Lampard to miss Manchester City showdown

• Raynor: Cash clash a mismatch
• Soccernet preview
Lampard is understood to need more time to recover from his recent hernia surgery and so will miss the trip to Eastlands along with striker Salomon Kalou and midfielders Yossi Benayoun and Gael Kakuta.
He is doubtful for Chelsea's Champions League group fixture against Marseille in midweek and their crucial Premier League match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge the following weekend.
Kakuta (back), Kalou (thigh) and Benayoun (calf) were all injured during Chelsea's 4-3 Carling Cup exit at the hands of Newcastle on Wednesday night. But Lampard is the biggest blow as the England midfielder had been widely expected back in time for their first real test of the season against Roberto Mancini's side.
Meanwhile, striker Didier Drogba insists he and partner Anelka are just as good at setting up goals as scoring them as they prepare for the trip to Eastlands.
"There are players in our team who can score goals but those same players are capable of giving assists,'' said Drogba. "It helps if I can go outside to the right or left to make some space and I know that Nico (Anelka) or Florent Malouda will move up front in that situation. They both show that understanding and the desire to score goals, so it makes things really interesting.
"We know we have the quality in the dressing room to make the difference at any time in any game. This is going to be important in tight games because our opponents will know that a chance could come from a good pass by a striker or by a good strike from a midfielder.
"It's good to have so many players with these qualities and to be able to make goals from different situations. The fluidity comes because we know each other so well now and that makes things easier for you on the pitch. That understanding is there because we've been together such a long time so we know more or less what we have to do.''

Reds reject Hicks' power play
Papers: United in decline?
Cole, who left Chelsea following the expiry of his contract, eventually joined Liverpool after weeks of speculation linking him to United, Tottenham and Arsenal, but Ferguson said United never considered a deal for the midfielder.
"We were approached by Joe Cole's agent at one point but we didn't enter into it at all," Ferguson said. "It was complicated to get involved in that."
Cole, who scored a vital goal for Chelsea against United last season, could get the chance to cause more damage when Liverpool head to Old Trafford on Sunday.
Cole said in the Liverpool Echo: "I love playing against Manchester United. I always have. Old Trafford is a great place to play and there is no better stadium to get a result.
"At Liverpool, with the added rivalry between the clubs, it is going to be really exciting. I'm really looking forward to it. It can be a game that you use as a yardstick to measure your season but if we take a result away from Old Trafford it will be really good.
"They are in a similar boat to us. They haven't started all guns blazing and have been in fits and starts. It will be a massive test but we have just got to keep doing what we are doing. I'm available for selection. I'm looking forward to it. People have told me what this means to the club and I am ready for it."
Meanwhile, Ferguson has confirmed that Nemanja Vidic will take the captaincy from Rio Ferdinand on a full-time basis.
"As I explained last week, what we wanted was someone who was consistently available for us," he told MUTV. "Everyone recognises Nemanja Vidic would always be there.
"He has been fit all season and you don't leave him out of the team unless you are going to rest him. He started the campaign as captain and it will stay that way."

Liverpool and City win, Juve suffer shock

Cole took just 25 seconds of their opening Europa League Group K match to find the net for his first strike since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer. Cristian Tanase equalised for the Romanians in the 13th minute but David Ngog took his tally to five in as many games in this competition and substitute Lucas Leiva scored the other for a victory which was not as easy as the scoreline suggested. In the same group, FC Utrecht earned a valuable point in a goalless draw against Napoli.
Manchester City's Europa League campaign started in confident fashion as Roberto Mancini's side secured a 2-0 victory away at Red Bull Salzburg.
City have been somewhat unconvincing in their past two league games - drawing 1-1 with Blackburn and losing 1-0 to Sunderland - but Mancini enjoyed a more productive night in Austria, with summer signing David Silva and forgotten man Jo on target.
Silva struck after just eight minutes when teed up by the Brazilian striker. The midfielder, who joined the club from Valencia this summer, swept the ball into the far corner with an accomplished finish. Jo turned finisher on 63 when a shot from Carlos Tevez was parried by Gerhard Tremmel in the Salzburg goal. It was the striker's first goal for the club since a Premier League win over Portsmouth two years ago.
Also in Group A, Italian giants Juventus were held to a dramatic 3-3 home draw by unheralded Polish side Lech Poznan.
Two goals from Artjoms Rudnevs (14, 30), the first of which came from the penalty spot, gave Lech a shock lead in Turin. However, Giorgio Chiellini struck either side of half-time and Juve's all-time record goalscorer Alessandro Del Piero put the club in front. But Rudnevs snatched a memorable hat-trick in the dying seconds to deal the Bianconeri an unexpected setback.
Holders Atletico Madrid suffered a losing start to the defence of their crown after slumping to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aris Thessaloniki. Spaniard Javito struck a brilliant winner midway through the second half for the Greek side, who kept their unbeaten European home record intact and burst Atletico's early-season bubble.

• Champions League galleryRooney has just one United goal to his name this season - a penalty against West Ham - and was left out of their last Premier League game at Everton after lurid allegations about his private life surfaced in the press.
The 24-year-old was restored to the starting line-up on Tuesday night but failed to find the net as Rangers held United to a scoreless draw at Old Trafford. But Fletcher says it is only a matter of time before Rooney gets back on the goal trail.
"There is nothing to worry about with Wayne," said Fletcher. "Wayne is a top player and the goals will come because he has so much quality. It is up to us create the chances for him and give him the opportunities to score.
"Maybe we have not done that lately. Against Rangers we didn't create anything for him. He will be frustrated with that but it will come."
Fletcher also defender Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to make ten changes to the United team that drew 3-3 with Everton at Goodison Park.
"We have a big squad and everyone has a lot of ability," he said. "It is difficult for the players coming in because they don't have that match sharpness. But training is intense and everyone is good enough to play in this team. The manager felt things needed freshening up and the team was good enough to win the match. I agree.
"What happened last night was that we came up against a team with five defenders and three centre-halves. Usually when you are up against teams who get men behind the ball, they have the extra man in midfield. It proved difficult to break down."

In the second half at Old Trafford, Valencia was involved in a challenge with Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot and required immediate attention. Television broadcasters decided against showing a reply - indicating the severity of the incident - and Valencia required lengthy treatment before being taken immediately to hospital.
After the match, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the club suspected Valencia had suffered either a dislocation or fracture of his left ankle and could be out of action for a lengthy period.
"It is a dislocation or a fracture and he gets operated on tomorrow morning [Wednesday],'' Ferguson said. "It was an innocuous challenge but when you saw the Rangers player waving, you knew it was a bad one.
"It is a bad blow for the boy. It is similar to the injury Alan Smith got and you are talking about the rest of the season."
Smith suffered a broken leg when playing for United against Liverpool in February 2006 and was sidelined for seven months, although team-mate Darren Fletcher - who was in the same side as Smith - is confident Valencia will still have a big future.
''It looked really bad,'' he said. ''Hopefully the scans show it is not as bad as we fear. After arriving from Wigan he had a great first season and was looking to push on this year. That is why the injury is a real blow.
''He has only just got back from the injury he suffered at the end of last season too. He is a strong character and a good lad. He has real determination and works hard. He will be back I am sure. He will have a long future at Manchester United.''
Ecuador national team doctor Patricio Maldonado told the Daily Mail: ''It is a double fracture to the tibia and fibula in his left ankle. He will be operated on.''
Hector Bohorquez, also a member of Ecuador's medical team, said the player would need psychological support. He added: ''This type injury has a huge impact on athletes who see how their bones have become detached. He must be continuously supported.''
Broadfoot spoke of his horror at witnessing the injury after the game and wished the Manchester United player a quick recovery.
''I'm not too sure what happened,'' he admitted. ''I just slid in and looked round and his bone was sticking out. We tried to get the physio on to help him because you don't like to see that.
''These things happen and hopefully he makes a fast recovery. I've never seen anything like that so close before. You see things like that on television and it's not good but, to see it there in front of you, it doesn't look nice and I just hope he recovers quickly.''
